Vivarail has designed and built a train that can be used now and in the future:

All power modules are inter-changeable so a train built with a diesel engine can be changed to batteries or fuel cells
Trains can run as hybrids so a battery train can house supplementary diesel engines as a fail-safe
The Automatic Charging Point allows battery trains to run on non-electrified lines
Designs are underway for Vivarail’s next generation of new-build trains which will use the same power systems as the Class 230 – the modules mean all Vivarail trains can take advantage of new technologies as they emerge
