Southampton rail research brings together research groups from the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering, the Transportation Research Group and the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR).

We lead the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) Centre of Excellence Infrastructure and host the National Infrastructure Laboratory, part of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC). And the multi-institution Track to the Future rail research programme. We promote and undertake research and consultancy in the areas of railway systems.

The Institute of Railway Research (IRR) is a world leader in the field of railway engineering and risk. Part of the University of Huddersfield’s School of Computing and Engineering, it specialises in research, development, and technology innovation.

Home to Centre of Excellence in Rolling stock, and with cutting-edge laboratory facilities on site, IRR carries out impactful research across various engineering disciplines. To date, its work has helped the rail industry to cut operating costs and boost safety and reliability.

Birmingham Centre for Railway Research & Education BCRRE

Supporting the rail industry with first-class education, innovation, and research, Birmingham Centre for Railway Research & Education (BCRRE) is the largest academic-based group of its kind in Europe. The centre’s portfolio of programmes is delivered by over 180 researchers, academics, and members of staff. Their research and education activities are supported by work around enterprise and innovation. BCRRE is also lead partner in the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN), a £92 million project involving the rail industry and various academic centres of excellence.
