Southampton rail research brings together research groups from the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering, the Transportation Research Group and the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR).

We lead the UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) Centre of Excellence Infrastructure and host the National Infrastructure Laboratory, part of the UK Collaboratorium for Research on Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC). And the multi-institution Track to the Future rail research programme. We promote and undertake research and consultancy in the areas of railway systems.

Loughborough University – Control Systems Research Group

Focusing upon the application of control and systems science, the Control Systems Research Group at Loughborough University, employs a range of established theoretical techniques to provide solutions to industrial problems across rail.

The group uses modern control techniques and modelling expertise to improve efficiency and accuracy of systems. Working closely with industry partners, the team ensures research remains relevant and applicable to real-world problems including, for example, the decarbonisation of road and rail transport.
