Rail project: Dawlish Sea Defences for Network Rail

Bam Nuttall is helping to restore and safeguard the railway line at Dawlish after it was badly damaged by a severe storm in 2014.

As part of this major resilience project, the company is delivering:

• An £80 million sea wall.
• £30 million cliff protection to ensure that the track is not damaged by falling cliff debris.

To date, it has saved 2,000 tonnes of CO2 by using low-carbon concrete, and laid 140,000 granite blocks around the Stiling Basin.

Its work will help to protect a “vital artery” between the South West and other regions.

Working in a joint venture with Kier and Ferrovial, Bam Nuttall delivered Elizabeth line’s Farringdon Station – which, today, is one of the busiest in the country. It was also the first Crossrail station to secure BREEAM excellent accreditation.

The station features two platform tunnels, which link ticket halls with precast and coffer ceilings respectively.

Bam Ritchies, Bam Nuttall’s ground engineering division, delivers a wide range of services, covering everything from smaller projects to national schemes.

With its 60-year track record and reputation for excellent value and problem-solving expertise, Bam Ritchies was named the Ground Engineering Awards Contractor of the Year in 2021.
