Company overview
Home to iconic locomotives and an unrivalled collection of engineering brilliance, the National Railway Museum celebrates the past, present and future of innovation on the railways.
We have a clear mission – to inspire the engineers of tomorrow. To succeed we need partnerships with organisations who are passionate about rail and engineering, and who recognise the importance of helping to inspire a new generation to take up careers in rail.
There are challenges currently facing the UK Rail sector which have and will impact the workforce of the future, such as the STEM skills shortage, advancing technology, and a lack of diversity. We must do more to address these challenges and equip the next generation with the skills required to meet the challenges of the future.
Our ambitious Masterplan project will completely transform the National Railway Museum in York and our sister site, Locomotion, in County Durham, attracting over 50% more visitors a year and displaying more of the national collection than ever before. Our new galleries will engage visitors in the engineering principals that powered the birth of the railway, showcase the past and future innovations that have taken us to where we are now, and ask visitors to imagine the potential of the future of rail – how will it improve lives, reduce carbon emissions, contribute to place-making and provide exciting opportunities and careers.
Working with the sector in partnership is essential to our future. Together we can positively impact UK industry through the promotion of science, technology, engineering and maths to build the workforce of the future.
