Established in 1989 by our Executive Chairman, Charlie Spencer OBE, Spencer Group is one of the UK’s largest privately-owned engineering businesses.
Spencer Group specialises in the design and build of complex engineering projects, working across the UK’s rail network, constructing, maintaining and extending the lifespan of bridges, providing materials handling and bulk storage solutions and working on power generation facilities.
Our integrated approach includes capability in design, building, civils, track, slipforming, M&E, materials handling, electrification, controls and instrumentations. Our multi-skilled experienced team allows us to deliver turnkey projects for our clients safely on time and to budget.
We work collaboratively with clients, asset owners, maintainers and operators, as well as third party stakeholders, to safely deliver outstanding projects which leave a positive legacy in the local communities in which we work.

Rail Infrastructure
Rail Infrastructure involves some of the most complex and sensitive work that any engineer can undertake, requiring meticulous planning and innovative thinking to complete large packages of works under time pressure and to strict parameters. With over 30 years of experience in delivering large scale rail projects for some of the most vital parts of the UK’s rail infrastructure.
From platforms to whole stations and local networks to projects of national significance, Spencer have the combined expertise in civil, electrical, OHLE, track and rail engineering to handle the demands of any project from design to delivery. Our industry-leading in-house design team combine with our planning team to coordinate the whole package of works, ensuring even the most stringent possession and cost requirements are met through value engineering and daring new solutions to even the trickiest engineering problems.
Collaboration is one of our biggest strengths, and we pride ourselves on great relationships with stakeholders and the engineering disciplines we bring to the table. From the design and planning phase all the way through to the construction and commissioning, all the parties involved input into the process to ensure the needs of each element in the project are fulfilled. Our previous experience gives us the knowledge to drive efficiencies and anticipate problems and work with the supply chain so that they can be solved with the minimum of delay.
Rail Depots
Spencer Group has a track record of delivering upgrade and renewal works at depot facilities across the UK. We specialise in delivering tailored solutions for train & freight operating companies, working with depot management & stakeholders to deliver works with zero disruption to existing operations.
We specialise in complex and multi-disciplinary projects with the capability of in-house delivery from start to finish. Our experience in the upgrade and renewal of depot infrastructure, rail systems, fixed depot plant and associated E&P services spans three decades and has seen us work across the UK on all sections of the rail network.
We have a safety first approach to working within live depot environments and have delivered a multitude of upgrades including CET, fuelling systems, train wash, HVAC, fume extraction, wheel lathe, maintenance/inspection facilities whilst providing innovative temporary works solutions.
